Michael is a graduate of Tarleton State University holding a B.S. In Fitness Management and a M.S. In Exercise Science. He has accumulated years of experience in high levels of rehabilitative movements as a college athlete within his own injuries, as well as hours in the university’s Motor Lab, training individuals with various disabilities.

As a college football player, Michael suffered dozens of injuries as an All-American offensive lineman. Suffering 11 shoulder dislocations in his junior year alone he did not miss one game. The high level of rehabilitation week after week while being painful and tedious, molded his mind-set in mastering the proper biomechanics of the total body. In off-season training he focused pre-habilitation of all major joints of the body while maintaining the high intensity sport specific training progressions.

While attaining his Masters degree Michael served as a graduate assistant for the football team as the running backs coach for Tarleton State. Throughout the duration Michael continued furthering his experience in rehabilitative movements of the cervical spine, core, and upper/lower extremities by working with individuals with various disabilities in the university’s Motor Lab lead by Dr. Kayla Peak, and Dr. Joe Priest. The Motor Lab was an adaptive state of the art facility, with a focus on bettering people in day to day functions. Rather it be a para or quadriplegic individual, or person with MS or cerebral palsy; the individual trained with in detailed functional movements.

Michael has a great passion and mindset to go along with the experience for the training industry. As a San Antonio native Michael is now the lead strength coach at WellFit private fitness and is soon to be married to his fiancé Kathryn Volz.

I live, eat and dream about coaching everyday. My goal is to influence an individual’s gifts in hope to cultivate the mind to become the best version of themselves. I believe that finding time for yourself and your health is very important, and can be a great example to family and friends. My favorite sport is triathlon and my favorite specialty is injury prevention nutrition counseling. My hobbies are traveling, painting “Paese Perla”, scuba diving, dancing, surfing and glamping. One time I even went skydiving on a dare and survived! I’m happily married with 2 fur babies, Shiner & Reeses. I was born and raised in North Houston with my older brother, Bryan. My family lives full time at the Frio River running the family business, Frio River Vacation Rentals. I take daily inspiration from my favorite quote, “Sometimes our strengths are just beneath the surface.” Let me help you find your strength!

Personal Trainer
Education

  • B.S. Economics – Oklahoma State University
  • ACE Nationally Certified Personal Trainer

Specialties

  • Body Weight Movement Training
  • Strength & Conditioning
  • Wrestling, MMA, Kickboxing

Bio:

Josh started his personal training in college. He did not grow up in a home that placed a high priority on physical fitness and did not start exercising until middle school. He discovered the sport of wrestling which demands a high level of all around fitness to be successful. Over the years his passion for fitness grew and when Josh learned that he could make a career changing peoples’ lives and helping them achieve their goals he knew that personal training was for me.

Josh graduated from Oklahoma State University (Go Pokes!) with a degree in Economics. He’s a nationally certified personal trainer through the American Council of Exercise (ACE). As an athlete, he was a 2x state placer and state finalist in wrestling. Through college he taught club wrestling for youth and for adults wanting to learn. Josh also began MMA training and competed in grappling and kickboxing tournaments. Along with combative sports, he has also completed multiple obstacle course races including a 14.2-mile Spartan Race and three ½ marathons. Josh even dabbled in bodybuilding and placed 4th in my first physique show in May 2016. He’s always am looking for new challenges and competitions to test his limits.

He trains constantly. Spending 1-2 hours a day in the weight room and 2-3 hours a day wrestling, kickboxing, and grappling. Though Josh has trained for half marathons and bodybuilding competitions, he has found a niche in bodyweight/movement training along with strength and conditioning. He is especially passionate about training for MMA and wrestling and train with those goals in mind.

Beside fitness and combative sports, he loves reading, listening to podcasts, hiking, and is always looking for new experiences and adventures. Josh believes that life should be lived to its fullest and it is important to balance fitness with everything else.

No matter your goal, whether it’s general fitness, weight loss, mobility, or athletic performance, Josh can help you achieve it!
